2G shutdown 2028: what to do with GSM gate intercoms and alarm diallers

Telekom and O2 switch off 2G in 2028, Vodafone by the end of 2030. Devices that can only use 2G then lose their connection. Here are the dates, the devices affected and the two ways to keep your installations working.

In short

In Germany, Telekom plans to switch off its 2G (GSM) network around 30 June 2028, O2 in the second half of 2028 and Vodafone by the end of 2030. Gate intercoms, alarm diallers and other devices that can only use 2G will stop connecting on those networks. Devices that make calls over 4G need VoLTE, on the device and on the SIM card. Installers should list their 2G installations now and plan the replacement before the switch-off of the network their SIM cards use.

Switch-off dates in Germany

Network2G (GSM) switch-off
Telekomplanned around 30 June 2028
O2 (Telefónica Deutschland)second half of 2028
Vodafoneby the end of 2030

These are the operators’ announced plans and may change. What counts for each installation is the network of the SIM card in the device.

2G switch-off in other countries

Du-Pol supplies partners in several European markets. This is the status of 2G in the countries where most of our partners work.

CountryNetwork2G (GSM) status
NetherlandsOdidoalready switched off on 1 June 2023
KPNplanned for the end of 2027 (1 December 2027)
VodafoneZiggo2028 or 2029, exact date not yet announced
SloveniaA1 Slovenijaexpected by 2030
Telekom Slovenijeno switch-off planned up to and including 2030
SlovakiaO2 Slovakiaby the end of 2028
Slovak TelekomJanuary 2029
Orange Slovenskono date yet; 2G stays for the next few years
4kano switch-off planned
Romaniaall networksno 2G switch-off date announced; 2G is still widely used
Serbiaall networksno 2G switch-off date announced

3G is already off in many of these networks, so when 2G goes, voice calls need 4G VoLTE. For new installations in any of these countries, choose 4G VoLTE devices now, so they keep working when 2G ends.

Which devices are affected

  • GSM gate intercoms that call the owner’s phone, for example older UP200 GSM units.
  • 2G alarm communicators and diallers that send alarms to a monitoring station or to phones.
  • Gate and garage openers controlled by call with a 2G module.
  • Other permanently installed systems with 2G modules, such as telemetry units and emergency phones.

O2 itself names alarm and other permanently installed systems among the devices most likely to be affected.

Why VoLTE matters

When 2G is gone, a device can only make phone calls over 4G if it supports VoLTE (Voice over LTE) and its SIM card has VoLTE enabled by the operator. A 4G device without VoLTE can still send data, but it cannot make a normal voice call. For intercoms and voice diallers this is the key point to check.

Installer checklist

  1. List all your installations with 2G-only devices, and note the network of each SIM card.
  2. Sort them by switch-off date: Telekom and O2 sites first (2028), Vodafone later (2030).
  3. Check that the replacement SIM cards support VoLTE and that VoLTE is enabled. If you want to change device settings remotely with the Configurator, choose SIM cards that also have a small mobile data plan; for calls and SMS commands only, a voice and SMS plan is enough.
  4. Decide per site: upgrade the device (where possible) or replace it.
  5. Plan the visits early, to avoid a rush of urgent call-outs in 2028.

Upgrade or replace

Already have UP200 GSM intercoms?

More than 8,000 UP200 GSM intercoms are installed. They can be moved to 4G with the UP200 VoLTE upgrade PCB: the installer unscrews the old board and fits the new one. The housing and the installation stay, so there is no remounting. Insert a VoLTE-capable SIM card and set it up with the Configurator. The upgrade board is supplied mainly for projects in larger quantities; smaller orders are mostly on pre-order.

Other 2G gate intercoms

Replace them with the UP200 VoLTE M2 4G intercom, usually in one visit.

2G alarm communicators

Replace them with a 4G, WiFi or Ethernet communicator from our product range.

The UP200 VoLTE M2 in brief

  • 4G VoLTE intercom with 1 or 2 buttons; calls the owner’s mobile or landline.
  • The owner presses 2# on the phone to open the gate; up to 100 numbers open the gate by a free call.
  • No cable to the house: only a 12 V DC power supply at the gate (9–16 V DC) and a SIM card that supports VoLTE calls.
  • First setup with the free PC Configurator over USB; later changes remotely with the Configurator (needs mobile data on the SIM card) or by SMS.
  • Outdoor use: −30 °C to +60 °C, IP44.
  • Du-Pol is the exclusive distributor: every wholesaler buys it from us.

FAQ

When is 2G switched off in the Netherlands, Slovenia, Slovakia, Romania and Serbia?

In the Netherlands, Odido switched off 2G on 1 June 2023, KPN plans the end of 2027 and VodafoneZiggo 2028 or 2029. In Slovakia, O2 plans the end of 2028 and Slovak Telekom January 2029. In Slovenia, A1 expects to switch off 2G by 2030, while Telekom Slovenije plans no switch-off up to and including 2030. Romania and Serbia have no announced 2G switch-off dates yet.

When is 2G switched off in Germany?

Telekom plans around 30 June 2028, O2 in the second half of 2028, and Vodafone by the end of 2030. These are the operators’ announced plans.

Will my GSM gate intercom stop working?

If it can only use 2G, it will stop connecting once the network of its SIM card switches 2G off. Moving the SIM to another network only helps until that network switches off too.

Does a 4G intercom work with any SIM card?

It needs a SIM card that supports VoLTE calls, with VoLTE enabled by the operator. Without VoLTE a 4G device cannot make normal voice calls.

Can I upgrade a UP200 GSM instead of replacing it?

Yes. The UP200 VoLTE upgrade PCB replaces the internal board; the housing and installation stay. It is supplied mainly for projects in larger quantities.

Where can installers in Germany buy the UP200 VoLTE M2?

Du-Pol is the exclusive distributor of the UP200 VoLTE M2. Distributors, wholesalers and installers can register as partners to see net and volume prices, or send their 2G replacement requirement to office@dupol.eu.
